Noel Stevens' Obituary
STEVENS, Noel Scott of Tampa, FL passed away on February 3, 2013. He is survived by his daughter, Holly Scott Stevens and preceded in death by his son, Mark Wesley Stevens. Noel came to Tampa as Chairman of the Music Department of the University of Tampa. He was also principal clarinetist in The Florida Orchestra. Later he joined the music faculty of the University of South Florida. He founded the Ars Nova Wind Quintet which concertized in Europe and the United States and recorded several CDs. He received a Bachelor of Music, Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music, The University of Rochester, NY. He is a well-known composer and wrote music for woodwind quintet, a clarinet concerto, orchestral pieces, wind ensemble works and an opera, The Enchanted Canary, performed in Tampa. In his earlier years he had his own jazz band. He served in the Navy during World War II. Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
