My wife Susan, our daughter Jennifer, our sons Ryan and Stephen and I met Gary, Mary, Taylor and Erin on the tennis courts where the kids took tennis lessons. We lived near each other & became friends and I because I am in commercial real estate showed Gary a site in Tampa for Centex & Gary beat out the other competitors for the site & built a nice multi-Family property so Gary and I were business friends also. He was a sharp business mgr., extremely nice and very personable and a pleasure to be around. Our kids were friends and we enjoyed him and his family. We have fond memories of going on a ski vacation together and had just a great time with he and his family. Last time I saw Gary was a business deal he was working on & he called me to help. A large restaurant property. I was glad to help him. That was about a year ago and wish we all could have seen each other more recently. We used to enjoy having dinner together at Chili's near where we both lived. Gary & Mary were very supportive to Susan and I when Susan had breast cancer and came to the hospital during her surgery. They gave me loving support that I needed at that time in the waiting room during the surgery. They were there for Susan afterwards. We will miss Gary and were blessed to have known him and to know his family and may God bless and comfort them in their sorrow.

My association with Gary began in late 1986 or early 1987. We both worked for Centex Homes. Gary was Division President for the Northern Virginia region based in Fairfax, and I was a company lawyer based in Dallas. I flew to Virginia to meet Gary for the first time and he impressed me immediately with his calm demeanor and quick wit. He wanted to make sure I was comfortable, so he invited me to dinner at his home, where I met Mary. That trip was all it took to form a friendship lasting 30 years.

Over the next 20 years, while we were both at Centex, Gary and I bonded over business deals, politics, family life and much more. My wife, Brenda, and I visited Gary and Mary in Virginia, and shared a trip to Boston. As part of the Centex family, the four of us traveled to meetings and outings from Hawaii to Monte Carlo. My office was relocated to Orlando, and Gary was transferred to Tampa which meant more interaction, including a trip to experience Gary’s new recreational interest in boating, which was about the only place his interest and mine diverged. I’m a golfer. Gary not so much, as he demonstrated during a company event he couldn’t avoid.

Life presents us with unique circumstances, and Gary and I each separated from Centex, but Gary was a faithful friend, and made it a point to call me once in awhile to toss around business ideas, legal questions and family news. We meet many people during our lives, and most remain mere acquaintances. The few who establish friendships are precious, but those, like Gary, who invest their time, sincerity and effort in relationships leave the deepest impression on our lives. Gary’s partnership with Mary, through good times and tough times, was inspirational to me, and Mary’s unwavering support and commitment to family reveals the quality of character Brenda and I knew from firsthand experience.

May God bless Gary, Mary and their family, and may their sorrow at this separation be tempered by their faith in the Lord. I will miss my friend a great deal.

I met Gary back in 2012 when our tenant that he worked for moved into the building here in Tampa. I feel lucky for the brief time he was a part of my life, because he was one of the nicest, most genuine people that I have ever met. He will be truly missed!
