Virginia Jean Barrar's Obituary
Jean Lewis Barrar passed away on October 2, 2017 in Tampa, Florida. Born July 14, 1920 in Breckenridge, Texas to Mack John and Nora Woodward Lewis. She is survived by Bob, Judy, Jennifer and Bryan Barrar of San Antonio, Texas and Becca, Alex Jr., and Alex III Petrilak of Tampa, Florida. Preceded in death by her parents, husband Howard Barrar, grandson Robert William Barrar, brother Roland Mack Lewis, sister Noreen Lewis Nicol, and first husband Rodney C. Tabler, who was killed in WWII.
Family will receive friends at Restland Memorial Park in the Wildwood Chapel on October 6, 2017 at 3:00 pm at which a time of celebration and thanksgiving is planned. A private interment will be held at Restland at a later date.
Jean was a long time member of First United Methodist Church, Dallas, having served in many areas. She began volunteering for the American Cancer Society in 1961, serving on the State Board and many state and local committees and was honored as a Distinguished Member of the Society in 2001. Other areas of long-time volunteer service were VNA Hospice, United Ostomy Association, and speaker for United Way. She also volunteered for AARP Chapter #3489 where she led tours for many years, Crossroad Community Services, Methodist Dallas Hospital, as well as president of Zonta Club of Dallas II.
The family will be forever grateful for extraordinary caregivers and loving and prayerful support of friends and church family. In lieu of flowers, if desired, memorials will be meaningful and appreciated to First United Methodist Church, 1928 Ross Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75201 or to the charity meaningful to friends.
