Pilar Corces Carey's Obituary
CAREY, Pilar Corces, 101, passed away April 14, 2011. Pilar was born in Tampa, Florida on July 6, 1909. She graduated from Hillsborough High School and went on to attend Denison University in Granville, Ohio and later graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona in 1932. Pilar went on a trip with her friend, Evelyn Cuervo to NY City in 1937 where she applied for a job with the Coca Cola Company. She accepted her first job working for Coca Cola in Wilmington, Delaware where she was assigned to a filing position. Pilar, because she was bilingual, was also asked to translate contracts from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English. In Wilmington, Pilar lived with the Gillan family where she also worked for her room and board.
In 1941, The Coca Cola Export Corporation moved to New York City just prior to US involvement in WWII. Pilar lived in Forest Hills Apartments with Elizabeth Lally for one year after which she moved to the Betsy Ross Apartments. Pilar was joined at various times by her sister Carmen, her mother, and her sister Mary and Mary's husband Ralph and daughter Judy Cohalla.
Pilar worked almost her entire career with the Coca Cola Company. She eventually rose to become the private secretary to the president of the Coca Cola Company where she finished her career in Atlanta, GA and retired at the age of 65 in 1975.
Pilar was a very private person, but still had many friends in many places. Pilar never spoke a harsh word about anyone, was adored by her family and will be missed by all.
Pilar was predeceased by her father and mother, Jose and Marcelina Corces, her sister, Carmen Corces, her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Ralph Cohalla, her brother and sister-in-law, John and Edith Corces, her brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Dorothy Corces, her sister-in-law Helen (wife of Armando Corces).
She is survived by her brother, Armando Corces, nieces, Judy Hunt, Sylvia Musalo and husband Frank and Nancy Lamson and husband John, nephews, Stanley Corces and wife Joyce, Ronald Corces and wife Judy, Richard Cohalla and wife Lynda and James Corces and wife Noreen. Pilar is also survived by numerous great nieces and nephews. Catholic funeral services will take place at 1PM on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at Boza & Roel Funeral Home, 4730 N. Armenia Ave., Tampa, FL. Interment will follow in Centro Asturiano Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 12PM to 1PM at the funeral home chapel.
