Philip R Leto's Obituary
Philip Rumore Leto, “Fifo” passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home with his family on April 20th
at the age of 89.
He was born in Ybor City on May 11, 1931, the youngest of four children born to Philip Castellano and
Angelina Rumore Leto. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, elder brothers Tom and Manuel and
sister Mary Ciccone.
After attending V.M. Ybor Elementary and Washington Junior High, he graduated from Hillsborough
High School in 1950 where he was voted “Class Wit”, then served in the United States Air Force during
the Korean conflict.
Phil earned a degree in education from the University of Tampa in 1957 and embarked on a more than
60 year career as an educator at Desoto Elementary in Palmetto Beach. Phil had a passion for teaching
and impacted the lives of so many students through the years.
In 1950 Phil met the love of his life, Violet Nuccio (Vi) and they were married in 1957. She survives him
after 64 years of marriage along with his son, Philip Leto III (wife Beth) and daughter Beverly Leto
Benjamin (former husband Jerry), beloved grandchildren-Philip IV, Jay, Elizabeth, Claire and Mia who will
forever cherish the memory of their loving Nano along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family expresses their gratitude to Angela Alvarez for the kind and compassionate care she provided
to Phil.
Phil was a distinguished educator and stellar athlete but most importantly he was a witty, affectionate
and nurturing husband, father and grandfather who lived life “his way. “
