Osvaldo Munoz's Obituary
In Tampa, Florida on Friday, February 10, 2023, Osvaldo Muñoz, 94, went home to his eternal resting place where he lived a long and love-filled life, surrounded by friends and family.
Osvaldo was born on September 3, 1928, in Regla, Cuba. His parents were Emilio and Louisa. Osvaldo’s father Emilio was a US Citizen who, as a teenager, went to Cuba to play guitar for a band. Emilio stayed in Cuba and married Louisa, and they had three children: Osvaldo, Roberto and Dalia. In 1947, Emilio decided to move to back to America and bring back his family. Osvaldo grew up in West Tampa and loved baseball and music, and in his early years was a Domino Champion in Cuba.
Osvaldo worked for the historic bakery, Wonder Bread, in South Tampa that was located at 420 S. Dakota Avenue. Upon leaving, he worked as a waiter for the iconic Las Novedadas Spanish restaurant which was established in 1890. Subsequently, he went to the popular Café Seville where he made numerous friends and fruitful relationships. Upon retiring from the restaurant, he went to work for the Bank of Tampa. After retiring from the Bank of Tampa, he went back to work at his final job at the former Palm Bank on South Macdill Ave.
He leaves his son Gilbert Muñoz (Maricela), his daughter Joyce Schenfield (Scott), grandchildren Anthony Fonseca (Allison), Nicholas Fonseca (Tracy), and Amanda Weigner (Jeff) along with great grandchildren Angelina, Jeyzenia, Maieli, Kayden, Arabella, Azalea, and Alaina. He is also survived by the mother of his children Sylvia Munoz, as well as his niece Myra Espinosa and nephew Robert Munoz. He is predeceased by his sister Dalia Menendez and brother Roberto Munoz, along with his wife Gloria Lala (son Michael), and his recently deceased wife Virginia Nunez (children Jose and Marlene Leon).
He was at his best when he was surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He loved singing Happy Birthday to everyone and was lovingly known to everyone as their Abuelo a.k.a. “Owal.” His faith in God was strong, and he is surely in heaven now reunited with many, many friends enjoying café con leche and singing their favorite songs.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that a donation be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
