Olga Mercedes Boeren's Obituary
Olga Mercedes Boeren, born in Tampa, Florida March 27, 1920 died September 20, 2018 at her apartment near The Villages, Florida. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and retired nurse. She led a full and inspiring life. She graduated from Sinai Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore, MD. She worked as a nurse at Johns Hopkins University Hospital, then at Tampa General Hospital, and St Joseph’s Hospitals in Tampa for many years. Then she worked in the offices of two prominent Tampa surgeons. She was married to John J. Boeren, Jr. for over 56 years. They met when he had appendicitis and she was his nurse. He was a soldier getting ready to ship out to D-Day on Omaha Beach. They secretly eloped to Annapolis because nursing students were not allowed to be married. She had two sons, John and Michael, four grandchildren, David, Scott, Julie, and Michelle, and nine great grandchildren, Marshall, Grant, Ava, Wyatt, Isaac, Henry, Hattie, Bella, and Isaiah. She was a very talented and prolific quilter and sewer, which brought her and many others great joy. She sewed for many charitable causes such as project Linus for premature infants in NICU and Operation Shoebox for our soldiers. For the last year and a half, she lived at The Willows, a wonderful assisted living community near The Villages, Florida, and was the leader of many of the resident’s activities. She enjoyed attending nearby New Covenant United Methodist Church in The Villages. She was a remarkable woman. We will miss her dearly.
