Neida and I (Mary Ellen Roche) would sometimes discuss what we would leave as our legacy after we passed from this life. Our conversation was deep and it made you think hard about what your priorities are in life. In our conversations, Neida would often compare herself with what others accomplished. She worried about what she would leave her children and she remarked about her life being simple and not offering much, so I wrote this letter to her on one of her recent birthdays. I think it explains her legacy pretty well.
Happy Birthday, Neida!
We send our love and hugs from Colorado!
While you were celebrating your birthday with our family in Florida, we were celebrating YOU in Colorado! January 1 represents a new year, but more importantly, it represents the day God gave you to us!
Did you know you’ve changed the world just be being you? I bet you’ve never thought about that—you’re too modest to be sure—but you have changed the world. Through your unconditional love, kindness, loyalty, devotion, positive attitude, caring and compassionate ways, wisdom, humor, patience, intelligence, resourcefulness, beauty and grace! You’ve always said that one life touches another and that we enrich the lives of others and that they, in turn, enrich us. Well, how do we learn “richness” and how do we share it with others? We watch you.
You’ve given us and the world a legacy of love---THE most important legacy of all!
Neida, you have given so much and never asked for anything in return. Thank you for always being there for us, teaching us, listening and helping us, forgiving us and loving us. In every conversation we shared, you always provided a beam of hope, a pinch of encouragement and a statement of praise. You were so generous with praise and so proud of your children.
We thank God for the priceless lessons that we’ve learned from you, and I’m afraid we’ll need a great deal of help living up to them.
May God bless you with good health, a contented spirit, and love-filled days wrapped in beauty and laughter.
We miss you terribly and love you endlessly. You mean so much to us!
Mucho love,
Mark and Mary Ellen
