I was so saddened to hear about Mark’s passing. I worked with him at Sear’s many, many years ago. He was always sweet and sassy at the same time. I remember his lasagna as being the best I’ve ever eaten. My deepest sympathies for his partner and family.

Paulette and I were shocked when we were notified that you had passed. The memories of Easter egg hunts, Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) opening presents, the many Sundays spent at Abuelo and abuelos home on Long St. The many aunts and uncles with our cousins being at all the get together at Lowery Park, Lake Carroll, the Causeway crabbing, and Pass-a Grille Beach. Life at an easy time in our lives. All the aunts, uncles, cousins and your friends that passed before you were at the gates of Heaven to welcome you home. Your presence on Earth will be deeply missed by everyone who knew you.

So many memories…
Every Sunday at Abuela’s house with the family. All the cousins hanging out. They would tell us to stay away from the railroad tracks and the flooded ditch and there was Mark leading the way back there where we would collect the remnants of road flares or climb on the rail cars or try to catch tropical fish from the ditch while watching out for water moccasins. Mark, you had some crazy pets… the squirrel monkey that pooped everywhere or that crazy pony that would throw you off it. Then there was all the Christmas Eve’s and Easters. All us cousins invariably got into some kind of mischief. I remember the gang of us walking to DeSoto Park. As we got older and the Disco era came around, we all tried to keep up with you on the dance floor which was impossible. We’d all practice the hustle at my house on the slick terrazzo floor. Crashing wedding receptions and parties and going to the clubs was a blast. It is sad now to think how we’ve all drifted apart. To drive down Long Street and see the empty spaces where our family’s homes used to be is heartbreaking. I pray that you left this world in peace and are now with your mom and the rest of the family who went before.

On December 11th at 11:10 PM, we lost Mark Borbolla, one of my oldest and dearest friends of over 40 years. This photo from 12/22/2021 was taken the day he told us that his latest scan was clear and that he was cancer-free.
Now almost exactly one year later, he was stolen from us by Covid. Naturally, my husband Philip and I are devastated by this tragic loss, and our deepest condolences go out to his partner, Karl, as well as his extended family.
Christmas this year just won't be the same without him at our house. As we mourn our fallen friend, I urge everyone who hasn't done so already to get the latest bivalent booster immediately. Mark had all four of the previous vaccines but had not yet gotten the bivalent version. Even then, he was unable to fight the effects of the virus.
It's a good idea to ask your family and friends to take a home test before any holiday gathering. Covid is still very much among us and more contagious than ever. If you do test positive, I also urge you to get the anti-viral drug Paxlovid, or an infusion, immediately. It's impossible to measure such a staggering loss of a friend who always had my back and saved me from disaster on more occasions than I care to count. We love you, Mark, and will miss you for the rest of our days. 💜

Mark will always be remembered as a loving, thoughtful and caring individual. He enjoyed life and loved the people in his life. I smile every time I think of him.

Mark, you and I became friends in 1968 and created a bond that made us more like brother and sister. I'm thankful I was able to see you before you passed, and we both said we loved each other. This picture is a fond memory of me, you, my brother and some friends celebrating all our October birthdays (yours included). Our friendship will last even in another life, and I love you so much that words cannot explain. One day, we will all be together again. I love you, Rest In Peace my dear friend.

Mark was and will always be a shining light in my life.
Growing up, in those dreadful teenage years, he was my what you would call… my ride or die.
He was 17.
I was 14.
He drove me everywhere.
We had so much fun, crashing weddings and going to discos.
He taught me how to “do the hustle.”
We loved to dance.
Before that, as young children, we enjoyed Easter egg hunts at my great grandparents house. He usually found the golden egg.
One time, we wandered off to the way back yard, where the chickens were. We went into their coop, and he lifted a big piece of wood, where there was a nest of cucarachas… BIG ones!
I ran so fast, and he chased me, pretending he had one in his hand!
And maybe he did!…I didn’t stick around long enough to find out!
Oh, how he laughed!
I remember many days when he would pull his eyelids up to reveal a redness, which of course, freaked me out.
He was such a prankster and loved to laugh, one of the things that I loved about him.
He was unapologetically Mark.
He cussed like a sailor, but he took care of his mother until her last breath.
If he loved you, he loved you, wholeheartedly.
He loved to cook and bake, and his cheesecake & flan were THE BEST.
When we were preteens, we would pretend to be “The Supremes,” w/ our other cousin.
It never really bothered me that he had to be Diana Ross, the lead singer.
It never really bothered me that he won all the golden eggs.
Just being in his presence was enough for me.
I will miss him.
