Mr. Mario R. Cabrera's Obituary
CABRERA, Mario R., 86, of Tampa, passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2007. Mario was born in Key West on October 24, 1920 and his family moved to Tampa in 1927. He grew up in West Tampa and attended St. Joseph's Catholic School. In his youth he was a member of the West Tampa Boys Club and earned the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. He attended West Tampa Junior High and graduated in 1939 from Plant High School, where he was a star basketball player. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the USS Bunker Hill. He worked many years for Herman Sausage Company and then became a union representative for the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workman of America Union for 17 years. He then worked as a salesman for Redwing Carriers and became President of the company until his retirement in 1976. He also served as the past president of the Wellswood optimist Club. Mario is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Helen Mendez Cabrera; daughter, Lucille Turner and husband Billy Sr.; 8 grandchildren, Tammy Steele and husband John, Billy Turner Jr. and wife Trish, Tianne Doyle and husband Dan, Brian Turner and wife Brandy, Tricia McManus and husband Mike, Tiffany Hudson and husband Rob, Taryn Turner and Fianc' CJ McManus, Tenille Trigg and husband Charles; 20 great grandchildren; nephews Richard and David Balbin, and niece Therese Balbin. The family will receive friends for Visitation Friday, August 24, 2007 between 10 and 11 AM at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 5225 N. Himes Avenue, Tampa, followed by a Mass for the repose of his soul. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice. Granddaddy...we will miss our jack of all trades, jokester, and your famous songs. We Love You !
