Joseph V Vattamattam's Obituary
Joseph Varkey Vattamattam (also known as Appachan), 89, of New York passed away on October 9, 2025, in: Patchogue, New York (Long Island). He was born September 27, 1936, in Kanjirapally, Kerala, India and was the son of Late Professor I.J. Varkey and Mariamma Varkey (Kallarackal).
Appachan graduated from St. Augustine High School in Ernakulam, Kerala, India. He continued his education obtaining two College Degrees, one from St. Albert’s College in Ernakulam, Kerala India (B.S. in Physics) and Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (B.S. in Civil and Structural Engineering). He received his Professional Engineering (P.E.) Certificate in Florida and New York.
He was a Civil and Structural Engineer for over 50 years. Appachan was the Founder and Owner of Structural Consultants Inc. (SCI), with offices in New York and Kerala, India. SCI was an engineering firm with over 25 employees in existence for over 20 years. Prior to founding SCI, he worked as a Senior Engineer for Florida Power.
During his time at St. Albert’s College, he was a member of the Field Hockey Team. He also enjoyed music, playing the harmonica and was a creative and talented painter. Appachan loved boating, fishing, beaches, and animals. His favorite sports teams were the Bucs and the Rowdies. He also enjoyed playing and watching soccer and tennis.
Appachan was one of the first Malayalees in the Tampa Bay area in the early 1970s and enjoyed organizing activities for families and being part of the Indian Community.
Appachan is survived by his wife, Alphonsa Vattamattam and children from his first marriage to Mariamma Vattamattam, Sheba Lucas and Joe Vattamattam; his four grandchildren Alec Lucas and Cooper, Lucas and Nolan Vattamattam; his siblings Elsykutty Neriamparambil, Abraham Vattamattam and George Vattamattam. He was predeceased by his siblings Professor Mary Varkey, Thomas Vattamattam and Francis Varkey.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Boza and Roel Funeral Home: 4730 N. Armenia Avenue, Tampa FL 33603. Visiting hour will be held from 2:00-3:00 PM prior to the service. A reception will be held after the service from 4:00-6:00 PM.
