Kosberg, Jordan I., PH.D
Dr. Jordan I. Kosberg, 83 of Tampa, Florida passed away Friday June 16,2023. He is preceded in death by his loving parents, Solomon Joseph ("SJ") and Hildegard ("Hilde") Kosberg. He is survived by his wife, Juanita L. Garcia, his brother, Larry Kosberg, stepdaughters Denise Sanchez (Max) and Yvette Beaty (Wesley) and grandchildren, Alex and Nicole Sanchez, Austin and Rachel Beaty. Jordan was born in Pontiac, Michigan and grew up in Milwaukee, WI, served in the U.S. Army, and earned BS and MSSW degrees from U. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Ph.D. from the U. of Chicago. He had been a Gerontological Social Work researcher and educator who held positions at California State University- Northridge, Florida State University, Case Western Reserve University, University of South Florida, McGill University (Montreal) where he held an endowed chair position; Florida International University, and The University of Alabama where he held an endowed chair position and was awarded Emeritus Professor after his retirement in 2010. During his academic career, he held Visting Professorships in China, Hong Kong, Australia, and Israel, and was named the Tower Fellow for the New Zealand Insitute for Research on Aging in 2002. He was a Fellow of The Gerontological Society of America and the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education and was awarded the Career Achievement Award in 2000 by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, and the Rosalie Wolf International Award in 2011 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse. Jordan held an honorary appointment as Adjunct Professor in the Division of Geriatrics at the University of New Mexico (2010-2013) and Visiting Professor in Highland University's School of Social Work (2010-2012). Jordan and his wife were members of the B'nai Israel Congregation. He was a Docent at the Holocaust and Intolerance Museum of New Mexico in Albuquerque and active with the National Association of Social Work- New Mexico. He was involved in Indigenous and Southwestern Art and enjoyed jazz performances at Albuquerque's Outpost.
Memorial Services will be held at Boza and Roel Funeral Home 4730 N. Armenia Ave Tampa, FL 33603 on Monday July 31 from 6:00 to 8:00pm
