Mr. Gonzalez came to Tampa in 1966, after leaving his home in Cuba, along with family, to start a new life at the age of 39; in less than a month he would be turning 40. He was determined to build a better life - and he did just that.
Being a true entrepreneur, he worked at a small store as a butcher. Within a short time he left and went to work for a small wholesale butcher shop; he was one of three owners. He worked hard and long and eventually bought out the other partners. His average workday then and now had always been 12 hours working by himself on a daily basis, eventually he bought an old garage and opened Tampa Steak on Columbus Drive in the early 1970's that still exists today and has over a dozen employees.
Always happy to see you, he was a man who proved larger than life. Happy to go to work each and every day; his work ethic sets an example for all of us to follow. He came here with nothing and manifested the American Dream. He will be sorely missed by all that loved and knew him.
