Ernest Carrera's Obituary
Ernest Carrera, 90 of Tampa died peacefully on March 21, 2021. Ernest (aka Abuelo/Beauty/Dear Ol’ Dad) was born on September 8, 1930. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Eliseo and Isabel Carrera, brother Eliseo Carrera Jr, and sisters Nemensia Carrera Carbonell and Josephina Carrera Pelaez, son Michael Louis Carrera as well as his loving wife of 53 years Corina Carrera. He is survived by his brother Delio Carrera, son Ernest Paul Carrera and granddaughter Angela Michael Carrera.
He was born in Ybor City during the great depression. He attended Ybor Elementary and Jefferson High School class of 1949; where he lettered in track and field. Upon graduation he joined the maritime academy of merchant marines and then drafted by the US Army in 1951 to fight in the Korean War. He spent 9 months in the mountains of Korea earning a perfect score while fighting the front line. He was promoted to sergeant while in combat where he led the 5th regimental combat team. He met the love of his life Corina Hernandez Carrera in 1955 while she was working at Fojaco’s cleaners in Ybor City and married her in 1957. He joined the Tampa Fire Department in 1957, where he devoted 23 years of service. He was then hired by the Hillsborough County Property Appraisers office in the late 80’s and finally retired in 1997.
He enjoyed spending his summers with his family on Sunset Beach. He frequented the West Tampa Sandwich shop where he would swap stories with his friends, as they solved the problems of the world. He will be very much missed but his love will continue to live through those who of us who were blessed enough to know him.
The family will gather at 9:30a.m. on Monday, March 29, 2021 at St Lawrence Catholic Church located at 5225 N. Himes Ave., with a 10 a.m. Mass. A funeral procession will follow to Myrtle Hill Memorial Park
