Elizabeth Virginia Caballero's Obituary
Elizabeth Virginia Caballero, 23, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2018. Born in Tampa on December 3, 1994, she is survived by her parents, Joseph and Claudine Caballero; her grandparents, Leo and Elaine Diaz and Michael and Kate Caballero; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
At the age of six months, Elizabeth was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and although expected to live less than two years, she thrived and enjoyed 23 wonderful years. Overcoming her physical challenges, she graduated from high school; traveled annually to Disney (she was an expert on all things Disney); and often visited her many relatives. A devout Catholic who participated in weekly Mass, she also was a Brownie, played challenger baseball, and annually attended MDA camp. Elizabeth loved animals, most especially her two devoted dogs, Bella and Puff, who were always with her. She visited zoos and aquariums and also had a passion for art and museums. Elizabeth cherished her long hair, twice donating hers to Locks of Love with her mother. Of all the experiences in her life, Elizabeth treasured time spent with her nurses, teachers, therapists, and especially, family.
Brave, humble and unfailingly positive, Elizabeth inspired all those who met her to gracefully persevere and appreciate every precious moment. Her angelic face, quiet determination, and patience were admired by many, even though she was unaware of her impact. Always happy, Elizabeth overcame her challenges as if to her they did not exist. Witnessing her strength, determination and faith made all those who knew her better people.
Her parents especially want to thank her nurse of 22 years, Dorrie, as well as Drs. Plasencia and Gunderman, who helped Elizabeth overcome her illness and live her life to the fullest. They are also grateful to Deacon Cris and the Jesuit community, especially Fr. Hermes, for their spiritual support throughout her life.
A wake service will be held at Boza & Roel Funeral Home Wednesday, April 11, from 6-8 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, April 12, 11 am, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations in Elizabeth’s memory may be made to Jesuit High School of Tampa or St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital Foundation - Chronic Complex Clinic.
