Conrad Nicholas' Obituary
The “Captain” called his faithful servant Conrad Theophilus Oswald
Nicholas, known to all as “Nic,” home on December 26, 2018. Born in St.
Vincent, West Indies on March 17, 1922; Nic was a faithful son to his
mother, Millicent Nicholas (deceased) and dedicated sibling to his brother,
Bertram (deceased), throughout their lives. Nic was a skilled carpenter and
blueprint reader whose mastery of his craft earned him distinction as the
first Black supervisor at the former Lago Oil Refinery in Aruba,
Netherlands Antilles. Nic was a renowned cricket player who set many
records and as Captain, led his team to numerous victories.
In 1962, Nic and his wife, Gertrude, known to all as “Princess,” moved
with their four young children to the United States of America. He worked
at the New York World’s Fair before accepting employment with the New
York City Transit Authority (NYCTA). Nic was a self-made entrepreneur,
who owned several properties in Brooklyn and Queens, NY and also
played a significant role in helping many individuals achieve American
citizenship. After twenty-five years of service, Nic retired from the
NYCTA and with his wife, moved to Florida. He and Princess traveled the
world until her death in 1996. Nic filled each day reading his Bible,
listening to his favorite hymns and enjoying time with his family.
Nic touched many lives and will be dearly missed. Presiding him in
death was his wife of forty years, “Princess” (1996) and only son, Winston
(2009). Left to carry on Nic’s living legacy are his three daughters: Elsa
Celestine (Roland), Lorna Alston (Keith) and Dr. Cheryl Nicholas; eight
grandchildren: Jeffrey, Amos, Jesse, Justin, Kevin, Myles, Alexis, Laura;
eight great grandchildren: Jordan, Bryce, Cragan, Clark, Prince, Clara,
Nylah, Pharaoh, Four nieces and nephews: Albert, Roland, Gailene, Learie, and a host
of relatives, friends and associates.
Along his journey Nic inspired us all and was a living testimony to the
bountiful blessings of obedience and “doing what the Captain says.”
Our family thanks everyone for their prayers and thoughtfulness.
