Cheryl D Wilson's Obituary
Cheryl D. Wilson,
“The Bowler’s Friend” has passed on August 26th. Cheryl was born in Vidalia, GA on November 3rd, 1943. She was 75. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years (Shelby Wilson); Son (Troy Wilson); Brother (Gregory Smith); Grandchildren (Salvatore A. Facciponte “Sammy” & Charles Thomas Arnao, Jr. “Tommy”); Two Great-Grandchildren (Alyssa Arnao & Charles Thomas Arnao III); numerous loving cousins and nephews. She is preceded in death by her father (Wade Smith); Mother (Emma Louise Smith); Sister (Lydia Gail Lindsey) and Daughter (Tracy L. Padron).
She graduated from Chamberlain High School in Tampa, FL in 1961. She was truly “The Bowler’s Friend”. She was Co-Owner/Operator of Wilson’s Pro Shop with her husband for over 20 yrs. She coached novice players as well as very talented above average players. She created, directed, and even revived multiple local bowling tournaments unselfishly for scratch players of any average. She dedicated her life to the sport and used it to her advantage for many noble causes. She created charity golf events to raise funds and awareness for others in need within the bowling community including Autistic & Special Needs persons/Domestic Violence Centers/Habitat for Humanity/ and anyone who just needed assistance & recognition.
As for her bowling abilities, she was a tenacious, competitive, and yet a compassionate player who won many events (Singles/Doubles/Team) all over the nation. Her two prized victories came in 1967 when she won the PBA Tour Pro-Am at East Gate Lanes in Tampa, and in 1978, The Tampa Women’s Scratch City Match Play beating her best friend for the title. Both times receiving big trophies. She believed and strived for fairness & equality in competition wanting to ensure integrity in the game. Most importantly, her hope was that any competitor in her events left with gratefulness to participate & experienced the same passion for the game.
With all these accolades and contributions, her peers – unanimously – inducted her into the Tampa Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1996 joining her sister in the elite club.
Hundreds of friends and bowlers will miss her terribly. Her family will deeply miss her smile, compassion, and yes, her tenacity. We are so saddened you have departed from us now. But, your legacy and love will soldier on.
