Amado Jesus Cardona's Obituary
Amado Cardona, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on November 21, 2025, at the age of 81. Born in Puerto Berrío, Colombia, on October 12, 1944, Amado grew up surrounded by family and the vibrant culture of his homeland. In the 1960s, he married Fidelina Cardona, his lifelong partner and best friend, and together they moved to New York City to begin their journey in the United States.
Amado and Fidelina welcomed two children, Edwin and Diana, and in 1973, they settled in Tampa, Florida, in the home where they still live today. Amado worked for many years for the City of Tampa, contributing to numerous renovations that shaped the city, including projects at City Hall, Ballast Point Pier and the historic Tampa Theatre. He took great pride in his work and retired in the early 2000 after a long and dedicated career.
Beyond his devotion to family and work, Amado had an enduring passion for soccer. He played well into his 70s, primarily as a trusty right wing defender, sometimes right winger and even a goalkeeper—despite being only 5’2”! Injuries eventually ended his playing days, but they never diminished his love for the game. He continued to cheer on his teammates, watch his children and grandchildren play, and follow soccer matches from around the world. Amado knew player stats and transfers by heart—without ever using the internet!
He especially cherished family outings to watch the Tampa Bay Rowdies at the old Sombrero Stadium, always wearing his favorite number 7 in honor of Steve Wegerle.
Amado was also an enthusiastic fan of the Bandits, Mutiny, Buccaneers, Rays, and Lightning, faithfully supporting Tampa Bay sports through every season.
His joy for life extended beyond sports—He was an adventurous father who loved fishing, camping, amusement parks, and beach trips. Always dependable, Amado was the kind of father you could call anytime, and he would be there without hesitation. And if he didn’t have the answer, he “always knew a guy” who could help—his resourcefulness was legendary.
Those who knew Amado will remember not only his love for family and soccer but also his incredible sense of humor. He was a natural jokester, always ready to lighten the mood with a story or a joke. You could count on him to give you a playful tap on the arm right before he told the joke or story. His ability to make others smile was one of his greatest gifts.
Amado leaves behind his loving wife Fidelina Cardona; his son Edwin Cardona and wife Emily Devizio Cardona, and their children Jackson Cardona and Mariela Cardona; his daughter Diana Cardona Wittorf and husband Keith Wittorf, and their children Sebastian Wittorf and Olivia Wittorf.
He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Amado Cardona, dedicado y querido esposo, papá y abuelo, falleció tranquilamente en su casa a los 81 años.
Nació en Puerto Berrio, Colombia, donde creció rodeado de su familia y la alegría de su tierra.
En los años 60 se casó con Fidelina, su compañera de vida y mejor amiga e iniciaron su vida juntos en Nueva York donde nacieron sus dos hijos.
En 1973 se mudaron a Tampa, Florida, donde Amado trabajó muchos años para la Ciudad, participando en proyectos importantes como el Ayuntamiento, el muelle de Ballast Point y el histórico Teatro Tampa. Siempre estuvo orgulloso de su trabajo del cual se jubiló a principios del 2000 después de una carrera larga y Satisfactoria.
Además de su amor por la familia y el trabajo, Amado fue un apasionado del fútbol. Jugó hasta los 70 años, casi siempre como defensa por la derecha, a veces como extremo y hasta de portero—¡aunque solo medía 1.57 m!
Las lesiones lo hicieron parar de jugar, pero nunca perdió el amor por el deporte. Seguía animando a sus amigos, viendo jugar a sus hijos y nietos, y siguiendo partidos de todo el mundo. Se sabía las estadísticas y los fichajes de memoria—¡sin usar internet!
Le encantaba ir con la familia a ver a los Tampa Bay Rowdies, siempre con su camiseta número 7 en honor a Steve Wegerle. También fue hincha de los Bandits, Mutiny, Buccaneers, Rays y Lightning, apoyando a los equipos de Tampa Bay en todas las temporadas.
Pero Amado no solo disfrutaba del deporte. Era un papá aventurero que gustaba de pescar, acampar, ir a parques y pasar días en la playa.
Siempre podías contar con él, si lo llamabas, ahí estaba sin pensarlo dos veces. Y si no estaba en sus manos, “conocía a alguien” que podía ayudar—¡Será recordado por su ingenio!
Quienes lo conocieron no solo lo recordarán por su amor a la familia y al fútbol, sino también por su buen sentido del humor. Era un bromista nato, siempre listo para sacar una sonrisa con una historia o un chiste. Antes de contarlo, te daba un golpecito en el brazo, como diciendo “prepárate”. Hacer reír a los demás fue uno de sus mayores dones.
Amado deja a su esposa Fidelina; su hijo Edwin y su esposa Emily, con sus hijos Jackson y Mariela; y su hija Diana y su esposo Keith, con sus hijos Sebastian y Olivia.
¡ Lo vamos a extrañar muchísimo y nunca lo olvidaremos!!
